LG 42" Plasma Can't Post

hi there.
im new to all this forum stuff but really had no other options! so hope i can get some help.
I have a 42" Lg Plasma which is about 3 years old.
i have always wondered but now its really starting to bug me. i watch my tv on 16:9, but get a really stretched picture. but on 4:3 its good size, but only uses half the screen!!! what is the point of this? having a 42" plasma and to get a good picture when using half the screen. I thought it might be because i run everything through my VCR? but im not sure! Its with everything, Foxtel, and TV. but when watch dvd's its fine and automatically sets to 16:9 as the best picture?
and what does a set top box do?
if i could get a hand that would be great
thanks!!!

The signal you are watching is in 4:3 format, and that is why it is stretched when watched at a 16:9 format. The only programs that are in 16:9 format are HD programs.
How are you getting the TV signal, cable. sattelite, antenna?
If you are running the signal through the VCR that is why everything is in the SD 4:3 format (SD=Standard Definition).

There's a settings for the image size 16:9 format. Try to check your user manual for your TV. My Samsung 42" shows 16:9 format by default.

PatHill that is not his problem. His TV is set to zoom all 4:3 signals to fill the screen. His problem is that all of his channels are coming from the VCR in SD (probably in 480i), and he doesn't like the picture. If he will run his antenna/cable/whatever straight to the TV he would see a better picture (providing his TV is capable of tuning HD channels from cable 'QAM', or from an antenna 'ATSC'). If it isn't he will need to get the Sony RDR-VXD655 DVD/VCR Combo that can tune channels from cable, and antenna (both digital, and analog), plus can record to DVD, and VHS tape.

I'm sorry I can't get the link to work.
