Hitachi 53SDX01B contrast

My Hitachi 53SDX01B has been perfect since I purchased it in 2001. Today it went on the fritz. The brightness and contrast will not adjust up. The picture is dark. The color appears to be fine. I can adjust it down but not up past a set point (which is dark) I have never had to adjust the contrast or brightness since the set was installed. Can anyone advise what the problem might be and is it worth fixing since all I have read indicates it will cost 1000+ when you figure the service calls and parts.
Added Sunday - now there is no picture. Sound is fine. Can hear the high voltage come on and all the LED's that are suppose to be lit are on. Picture tubes do not come on.
