Magnavox problem

I aquired a Magnavox PTV910... 55P8288 serial #66925424. I got this free so am not too concerned if the thing is toast!!!
The problem is it will not stay turned on, I have it in the garage as I wanted to check it worked before getting it into the house. I turned it on and the on button is red, it took a bit of searching to figure out how to clear the parental security codes but got it done. Now, I can have the set turned on with no signal to it (no cable/attenna in garage) and it seems to stay turned on, however if I try to play my dvd player through it, it immediately turns off.
Any ideas what this could be ?
Is the thing worth repairing?
