Sony KP-51WS510 problem

Hi, a friend of a friend is willing to part with his Sony KP-51WS510 tv for very very cheap. The only problem is this:
Whenever he turns the tv on it runs fine for half an hour or so. Then it starts to get progressively darker over time.
Am I getting myself into repair costs way over my head with this? Or is it worth taking off his hands and trying to fix myself?
Any ideas on what it might be?
