mitsubishi sparks Can't Post

I just got this 50" mitsu for free because it has problems. Right off the bat I've found something very exciting, sparks!! Attached is a picture of the item that causes the sparks. It looks like the shielding has melted as a result of over heating. My questions is, is this the result of another issue or the cause of the problem.

The set turns on long enough for the spark to occur, then shuts off ( a spilt second reaction). The item that has melted has a few brothers right next to it. Any clues as to what these guys do? Would simply replacing it fix the problem? What else should I check into?

Now I'm going for it. I tore into the set and started documenting what I've found. Closer inspection upon the arcing area reveals some burnt parts. I also noticed some fluid residue or stains (pretty dried up). When I got this set the guy said the only thing he invested in was a $50. service call. I'm gonna call him tomorrow to follow up on that statement, but if I were to take a guess it would be that a tech added some cooling fluid to one of the crt's. Or possibly flushed them, but I think that would run more than $50. Either way it looks like arcing occurred in a concentrated area. A couple of parts show some signs of arcing at the board level, but they still look functional. I will eventually check them for voltage loss or resistance.

All in all, this one is gonna take some time. It's a little more involved than my novice skills, but slow and steady will get it done. After all, my time isn't worth the $125 an hour the techs out here charge so I can spare the time.

One for the record books [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I was right about the fluid, but I had no idea how bad it was. As I sat there looking at the cabinet for more obvious signs, I noticed that one of the crt's sat considerably lower than the other two. I reached in to touch it and it wiggled. It seemed to be hanging there freely. So I decided to try and remove it. 200 screws and one thousand wires later, it finally came out. But not by its self, all three crt's are mounted together in a monster of a unit weighing about 40 lbs. As I pulled them from the cabinet, the bottom half of the damaged crt just dangled by the wires as it was completely severed from the top half. That explains the fluid leak, and the arcing.

So, I will now consider selling the parts or finding the exact same model with a separate problem to combine in to one working unit. I don't think the tube will be a cheap enough fix to justify repairing the entire unit.

You sure get what you pay for...
