CRT Repair Question Can't Post

I have a Sony Wega from early 2000s which has some geometry issues. Mainly it's not straight horizontally. I've started using it for gaming a lot recently and the problems are a lot more noticable than when watching a show. Anytime there is a horizontal edge on screen you can see it curving and it drives me crazy.

I'm assuming this isn't something I can fix myself.

My question for the pros is: if I call someone to adjust it, is it likely that they can fix the problem (or at least get close-- say 95%)..? Or is it more likely that after they adjust it the bending will be slightly better but still noticable and I won't be able to get a refund..?

If anyone can give me a ballpark figure of how long it would take and how much it might cost that would also be helpful. I'm guessing it would have to be done onsite since it is too big & heavy for me to cart back and forth to a shop.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Re: [Sam1] CRT Repair Question [In reply to] Can't Post

Anyone...?

Can a tv repair pro hypothetically fix this (or very nearly so) by doing some adjustments or not?

Or is it some massive effort like replacing 100s of capacitors?

Sam1;.....

1st off , a model number would've probably gotten you a response by now....
So it's time for that..
& a chassis number would also be helpful....

That depends on the nature of the problem & ""How much electronic/TV repair background experience do you have ????"""
A pix would give us a much better idea of what the problem is....
Can you take & post pix ????....

Depends on the quality , integrity & technical ability of TV repairmen in your area !!!!...

I've done some small mods/repairs on classic video game systems and such... fixed a mobo by changing some bulging caps...

If your diagnosis suggests it's hobbyist fixable I'm game.

Yeah... Do you want full screen shots or close ups of a horizontal edge... or something else...??

That depends on ones definition of "hobbyist fixable"...
The pix will answer some questions...
IF you can get a "crosshatch" pattern on-screen , take a full screen shot & some GOOD , CLEAR , IN FOCUS shots of the problem area(s)....

BE SURE to use the "Preview Post" at the bottom of the reply post to check & MAKE SURE that we do NOT need an IMAX monitor to look at your pix...
I they are TOO wide for the thread , go back to your source (Photobucket , imageshack or ??) & re-size your pix...

THANKS...

A qualified tech might be able to correct your problem by accessing the service menu. I DO NOT recommend that you try this your self because you can wind up making the problem worse if you do not know what you are doing. The price would depend on your local economy.

That helps... thanks.

That's with and without flash (it was night lol) the camera was on a makeshift stand so both pix are comparable... you could almost overylay them.

The problem doesn't look too bad in the pictures but I dont think it does it justice...

Sam;...

THANKS for the GREAT pix...Smile...
GOOD JOB !!!...Sly....

I have some questions before I determine the best way for you to go...
Any idea when or how this happened ???
Was there a storm with lightning strikes nearby ???
Was there a local power (AC) failure/interuption ???

I'm really not sure... could be anything... age... getting banged up a bit in transport... I think it was like this when I got it a year or two ago but I'm not sure... can't remember and I sure didn't run a testpattern when I got it lol! The problem's easy to miss when watching a show so I didn't pay much attention until recently.

Not since I've owned it.

Since I've owned it... well... yes and no... I have it on a surge protector and I always turn it off when not in use so no power fault could have occurred without my knowledge... but I'm sure I've accidentally cut the power on the surge protector without turning the tv off a few times... I never knew you had to shutdown the tv like a computer! I don't think that 's the root cause but who knows...??

Sam;...

I was hoping that I could rule out possible Microprocessor/Eprom corruption...
But I can't due to the circumstances we have..
Microprocessor/Eprom corruption would be a rare possibility...
However , I think that I'll presume that it's not the case here...
"Age" is the most likely cause as it happens so slowly & goes unoticed..
So , I'd recommend you follow mel's advice...

See if there's a GOOD qualified "SONY" TV" tech in your area...
He/she needs to be VERY qualified on Sony CRT "XBR" type sets...
OR an Sony expert wannabe can screw up the TV far worse than ANY amateur can..

Do NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES go into the Factory Service Menu..
The symbols & designations for the adjustments there are for Factory trained &/or EXPERIENCED TV Repair techs ONLY & NOT novices such as yourself...

Turning the TV off at the surge protector will NOT harm the TV in ANY way...

Good Luck....Smile..

PLEASE keep us posted on your progress...
THANKS....
