Close Caption Circuit? Can't Post

Hello, Hope this hasn't been covered here before. I did a search and couldn't find this same question.
My moms' close caption on her Sharp TV stopped working a few days back. Her provider is DirecTV. When I checked the TV, the closed caption was off. I turned it on and it still doesn't work. According to DirecTV the box she uses has no control over captioning. It passes right through the box and I checked and there aren't any captioning options in the menu or using the yellow button.
The options on the menu are "caption" or "off" on one line and "Data 1" or "Data 2" on the other choice. I have tried all combinations.
My question is: Is there a caption circuit that can go out and everything else work ok?
A little history on the TV. It did occasional popping and snapping during the winter and once it started you had to turn it off and back on to get it to quit. It quit doing it and hasn't done it for several months, yet just a few days ago the captioning stopped working.
