Emerson TV problems

My son has an Emerson TC1365B. Shortly after turning on it was making a screeching sound and the picture would show black and white lines until i turned it on and off. Turning it on and off would usually fix the problem for a while. Now, the tv screen goes black and there isn't any volume. I'm not sure if it is on or off. After repeatedly turning the TV on and off, it sometimes starts working again. I would like to repair it myself if possible. Any suggestions?
