Help PLEASE help Can't Post

i have an older GE tv, its 27 inches and the model number is 27GT271, now the problem is is that the screen is extremely dark, I've tried to brighten it via the system controls but still nothing. And when something really bright comes on its like looking at a light, how the light kind of stretches. Well thats the problem the colors kind of stretch out bright and dark so is their a diagnosis? can i still revive her? Thanks in advance!

I dont have your set in my data log but I got this from a 27GT420, could be the same chassis, can you supply a chassis number?
27GT420 dark picture; turn up G2 if retrace lines show then check R715 resistor. Replace if open.
Hope this helps, give us the chassis number if you can.

Do you have either an analog or digital VOM (volt/ohm meter)? I prefer a digital for testing resistors.
Do you have a 25 to 35 watt soldering iron? NOT a soldering gun!! They get too hot.
Solder? unsoldering wick?

Is that meter digital or analog? Digital displays numbers, analog has a needle that swipes back and forth. I know nothing about "cold guns" is that a soldering iron that stays cold until you use it?

http://www.coldheat.com/pro.cfm this is what i have, it says its a soldering iron, and I'm not sure what my VOM is it might be analog and my brother is an electrician so i can probably borrow one of his so, continuing as if i had both or either one, can i get directions as to what i need to buy and how to replace the parts please?

I would feel better to first know what kind of meter you have.

Re: [specialeedd] Help PLEASE help [In reply to] Can't Post

Dont buy anything just yet, unplug the set and open it and look to see if you have this resistor, location R715. It should be a 158K ohm resistor or it could be 113K. Set your meter to x10K calabrate it to full deflection (0 ohms) then pull out the board (you may have to disconnect some leads, make sure you remember where they go)
DO NOT!! ATTEMPT TO DISCONNECT THE WIRE TO THE PICTURE TUBE!! Even with the set unpluged it can hold a serious high voltage charge!!
Turn the board on it's side, wick out (unsolder with unsoldering wick) one leg of that resistor, turn the board back over and test the resistor. If you get "0" ohms or if the needle doesn't move at all the resistor is bad and you need to replace it. If you get a reading somewhere in between then it is most likely good.

But first lets find out if you have that resistor in the first place. It shuold be near the Horz out transistor which is near the flyback transformer (sends that wire to the pic tube that your not going to touch), it will be under a larg "white" resistor that is standing up about 1/2 to 1 inch off the board and should be marked a wattage value of 20watts.
Let me know.

I don't have an R715. the closest I have to an R715 is a R7139 and an R7140 but these are for the "Tuner ISO"

Sounds like you are looking in the wrong area, are you looking in the horz deflection?

Re: [RetiredTVguy2] Help PLEASE help [In reply to] Can't Post

i was looking at the list on the back of the tv case, where theres a picture of the schematics and a list of the parts, i looked up and down and not a single part that matched, they came close but no match. Is this part not on the schematics or the list? could you tell me if its not on the schematics then its location if its in my tv?

No, you have to look on the board, like I asked you to. I gave you a whole detailed discription of where and what to look for. The actual folder will have the part listed, I put no faith in those stickers on the cabinet.
