KDL-37M4000 power surge Can't Post

Hello all. The above set is on the blink. No power at all after a bolt of lightening blew out the transformer in front of the house. I live on an island, and a repair person to come over is at a premium. I've swapped out many parts on our laptops over the years, but never opened up a tv before. From here and elsewhere it appears my power supply is shot. That said I've found one on EBay for about $100. Do you think that is the issue, and if so, how involved is it to swap out? I no nothing of voltage meters or any of the usual tv repair jargon I see here(wish I did). Any help you can send over is greatly appreciated.

have a look on the power supply board inside the tv there is usually a fuse on the board, i would test that to see wether it has gone bang, before you even think of replacing the board

Thanks - will do, but how do you check to determine whether the fuse is shot or not?

do you have a multimeter to hand that has a continuity setting ?

if not get 2 x 1.5v batteries and an LED and some wire, pull the fuse out and make a simple circuit using all of the above :) little fiddly but easily done

BATTERYBATTERY----LED---FUSE----(BackToBattery)

if the led doesnt light its either the LED is wrong way or the fuse is blown, led lights the fuse is ok

if its a glass fuse you should be able to see the wire inside if its not a glass the use the tip i gave

I turned over the set, and found a small door with a hinge clip of some sort. Took that off, and can see a circuit board. It seems to give me access to plugs, but nothing which appears to be a replaceable fuse.

Should I take off the back panel?

btw - it looks like you gave me a link, but it doesn't work.

I see what appears to be a fuse about 1/4" away from where the power comes into what I guess is the power supply board. How do you determine if it is blown? Looks fine. It's a white tubular fuse with silver coating on each end. No discoloration seen. It looks like this is something soldered to the board.

usually just pop out with a screwdriver.. will need to come out so you can test it as looking from outside you wont be able to tell if its good or not

Is the fuse not the white cylindrical thing, but instead a black rectangular box?

it will either be a white or glass cyclinder just over 1cm long

link below has pictures of them on it and also how to test

The "white cylinder" sounds like a cermic fuse. Sometimes fuses have a lead on each end which is soldered into the board rather than the clip in type. The principle is still the same as far as testing.

Thanks - the one in the pic they are testing is exactly what I'm looking at. Guess I'll be getting a tester tomorrow.

Take fuse out. Pull out any battery operated device (9-volt ones work nicely) and turn it on. Unplug the battery and plug battery back in rotating 90 degrees so that only one terminal is connected. Connect fuse under test to the two remaining terminals. If device runs - fuse good.Wink

Can someone tell me the fuse size/ maybe part number so I can order one?

Thanks

I checked the fuse - worked fine, replaced the power supply board, still no lights whatsoever. Any guesses what's up?

Thanks
