Toshiba Menu Background	Can't Post

I have a 36" Toshiba CZ36V61, bought probably in 1999. The black menu background remains on screen even after exiting menu. While switching between functions, e.g. DVD, video, TV the black background momentarily disappears, and then re-appears in a few seconds. The text from the menu can be eliminated, but the background remains. I tried unplugging the set over-night with no change once plugged back in. I am wondering if my grandson has randomly pushed some code on the remote or chasis buttons that has caused this. Other-wise it might just be a malfunction in the TV. Has anyone encountered this, solved it, or know what this might be. Thanks.
