intermittent picture loss

hello!
i have a gemstar{shop nbc} 56" lcd rear projection tv.periodicaly,i lose the picture,either to black or a "solarized" still image.
the tv will not turn off,but unplugging it for a while will enable a successful restart.
the lamp and fan are working fine and the set runs through a surge protector.
any ideas??
