No, a speaker is not capable of producing a picture, only audio.

Hahaha thats pretty funny, not what i meant. I meant can i watch tv and have the sound though the speakers? I know it sounds like a stupid question but its a new tv and i have never used optical audio cables, and i really cant figure it out. Guess ill just have to keep working on it.

you should be able to get the tv sound through the surround sound system.what about when you play dvd's.can you hear the sound through the stereo?you have to tell the tv you are using optical out or its default setting is probably analogue.check the menus again or ask the sales guy who sold it to you

I had the same problem with my SONY - apparently if you use a HDMI cable from the cable box to the TV the audio isn't stripped from the signal to make it available at the audio out connection on the TV. The only solution is to run a digital or optical cable directly from the cable box to the receiver.
