46 inch Zenith

I was Just given a 46 inch Zenith from a friend of the family, They had bought new one due to a problem they had. occasionally every 2 or 3 hours or maybe not at all the Picture will completely distort into a picture about half to 3 quarters of its size, unreadable.. It will stay that way for a couple hours then go back to normal, Any ideas? Please help
