Sounds like a power supply issue. Picture of the power supply with the back removed might help!

Sorry was wrong about the hum i have plugged in in twice since I posted it doesnt make any sound sorry for the mis-understanding on my part.I heard it make a very faint noise right beside it when you first try to turn it on for 1-2 second when it's first turned on like its trying to power up but it stops then nothing.

Re: [blueace33] Magnavox Tv broken [In reply to] Can't Post

The discoloration on the back of the PS could be normal. It is not uncommon for parts of the board to look "burnt" but that is from heat that comes from the components on the otherside of the board. That said, sometimes if their is a bad solder joint then the current through that connection can heat up more as time goes by and eventually burn up and not make a connection again and thus you may hear poping or a malfunction. This is about as basic as I can explain it. These are called "cold solder joints". I can not tell from the picture if either is the case here. Brownish can still be Ok but Blackish or a burnt look is not.
I do not see any components on the PS that look "blown" but the light makes it tough to tell and keep in mind most bad components don't show anything wrong visually or that you can see. In over thirty years of troubleshooting electronics only about 10% of blown or bad components show it visually. But you said that you heard a "pop" and from my experience that ussually show some kind of physical indication.
I still think it sounds like the PS to me.

Re: [Jdonovan19] Magnavox Tv broken [In reply to] Can't Post

Looking at the photo it looks like 5054 (a Zenior Diode or just a Diode) does not look right. It could be the picture buit I can't tell. Also the components that are getting hot should be MOSFETs and that would not "pop" if they went bad.

Is it worth replacing the whole power board to see if this fixes the problem if it dont i guess i could always scrap it and re-sell the power supply to re-coop some of the cost of it..

that's not a zener.it's just a plain jane diode. There are 4 of them grouped together and most would assume it's rectifying(bridge) the ac off that transformer that they are sitting next to.. could be the problem...could not be.You probably would smell it if it was smoked.

Re: [Gus67] Magnavox Tv broken [In reply to] Can't Post

the other photos of the crap on the bottom of the PCB is flux possibly from a previous repair or a sloppy solder job at the factory...

that is not your problem

get a service manual and start checking voltages.you are wasting your time looking for visual faults like you are.It should be relatively easy to find the problem if the tv itself is not powering up.

You assume wrong! The bridge rectifier is the large 4 legged black "IC" on the bottom right attached to the heatsink. I have never seen one of these fail on a LCD TV.
Like I said, if it went "POP" there is usually physical evidence of a component failure.

WOW...touchy aren't we?

Congratulations,you know your components(almost).

FYI

You know,the diode that you called a Zener...is not,it's just a diode.

The pop he may have heard could in fact be a smoked component, chances are that it might not be visual...just cause it popped does not mean it left a burn mark or discoloration. It could have failed and still look like the day it was soldered in.

Re: EVERYONE... Magnavox Tv broken [In reply to] Can't Post

To everyone reading this.....

Gussie69 is an egotistical narcisstic sociopath who thinks he is a electronic whiz....
The only thing that whizzes about him is what runs down his leg....
I've had numerous run-ins with him before & he's back to his old tricks again....
Somebody that can't tell the difference from a tiny diode & a full sized bridge rectifier is in NO position to be giving technical advice....
His lack of experience shows at every turn...
Check some of his other posts....
I reccomend you follow others advice...

Jdonavon19;....
You & others must have some great eyes....
I looked for "diode" or "zener" 5054 on the pix & could not find it...
I requested better pix.....
No matter , I do NOT have experience or training for LED , LCD or Plasma TVs...
I readily admit that rather than try to play games & fake it like Gussie....

blueace33;...

GOOD LUCK with the repair & watch who you listen to...Sly....

I KNOW who's going to reply & what to expect from him , so have at it Gussie girl....Mad...

Re: [Ron.M] EVERYONE... Magnavox Tv broken [In reply to] Can't Post

Ha Ha Ha...you finally came out to play...i knew you would after a few strategic posts..

You know Ron,you are right...I know nothing and my advice is complete nonsense..You on the other hand are wise beyond your years.

I have never claimed to any of the things you have just posted. In fact,I have always downplayed all of my skills. You on the other hand have ASSSUMED I think i am superior to most.

Can you provide examples to which I claim superiority over anyone here or my superiority in the TV repair department?

you know Ron,you can fix TV's..but that's about all you have to cling onto.I bet there is not a single thing other than tv's you have to notch your belt with.

go ahead...prove your post bout me saying I am superior and an electronics whiz.

Ron,

just curious...

What would you call 4 diodes next to a Transformer on a power supply board?
