Looks pretty good. No heat problems (short test) and sound may have improved.

I'll say , looks good to me too !!!..Smile...

Take an AC voltage reading between pins 5 & 6 of CN107...

You must've missed the last line of my previous post, Ron. One step ahead of ya:

VDY = .3 Vrms, ~7.8khz

That's still low by my calculations but who knows.

Diodes measure the same as usual. Face of CRT is getting charged again. I recall it wasn't at one point, although I haven't been checking it recently. Wanna try hooking it all up and see what happens?

No , I didn't....

VDY = .3 Vrms, ~7.8khz
There's 2 problems with that reading !!!
1)...3 Vrms should be around 3 volts AC p-p..
2)...~7.8khz , is WAY off !!!..
Should be around 60 cps !!!

Quote

I'm a bit gunshy at the moment !!!...
BUT , IF you so choose , hook up the yoke , leave the "C" board OFF the CRT & see if you can get a better reading from pins 5 & 6 on CN107..

DID you change C535 , C501 & C503 ???

Not C503 but I'm sure it's okay. I can replace it later as a precaution.

Semi-good news. With CN107 connected I get this:

~55 Hz
9 V rms

That's high (?) but again, it's rms, not p-p. I don't believe it's possible to reliably get a p-p value without being able to characterize the exact waveform.

Only had it on for a second or two but no magic smoke.

Ok , that's GOOD news !!!

9 V rms IS acceptable...
~55 Hz IS also acceptable...

Time to grow a pair....Wink...

With the "C" board OFF the CRT , turn the TV on for 5 seconds & check Q591 & Q503 & Q505 for heat...
IF they run cool , go to 10 seconds...
IF they still run cool , go to 15 seconds...
IF they still run cool , go to 30 seconds..
Go by 30 second increments till you reach 2~5 minutes...
Allow some time between cycles for them to cool down IF they are warm..
Please post results...

I'm not getting my hopes up or anything but I went up to 5 minutes and they're barely even warm.

The squeal is gone, replaced with the almost inaudible high pitched sound CRTs normally make. Squeal comes back if I disconnect CN107 so that's another good sign.

>Time to grow a pair....Wink...

Well I did skip most of your recommended time intervals, so there! Wink

Come on, let's try it: C board ON!

Some followup advice;=>

I STRONGLY recommend you replace the following parts;=>...
C503 , 1,000 mfd @ 25/35 vdc...
R501 , 0.56 ohms 1/4 or 1/2 watt
R505 , 0.47 ohms 1/4 or 1/2 watt
The jumper wires you used to replace R501 & R505 will NOT act as a fuse like those 2 resistors will...

I'm curious...
How about running the TV for an hour straight & temp test Q591 & Q503 ???
How do they do ???...

Ron,

I did check for temperature last night when I turned it off. After about an hour, Q591 & Q503 were fine but IC501 was hot. It's attached to a huge heat sink, but so is the nearby voltage regulator and that one wasn't very hot. That may or may not be a problem. However...

I just turned it on today and now I'm only getting a single bright line in the middle of the screen. I turned it off quickly to avoid burn-in.

That didn't last long. Frown

Everythings about the same for diodes & IC501 except pin5 is around +2.9V

Tried resoldering it and now it's +0.5V. Hmm.

9.7VAC (rms) at 55.5Hz. You specified 5 to 6 but I'll note that it reads the same in either direction, unsurprisingly.

It's probably meaningless but I noticed that if I only have one probe connected (the other floating) I get ~2.6VAC on pin 6 and ~0.25 on pin 5. With one probe grounded I get ~10VAC on pin 6.

Anything in here provide any clues?

When you said "Horizontal" line , you meant the single bright line is going from left to right ???..Correct ???...

Because IF that's the case , you should have a full pix from top to bottom...

Yes, left to right. And as far as having a full picture...I do!

An intermittent problem. Wonderful. Now I'm afraid to leave it on in case the vertical deflection suddenly drops out again and burns my CRT. Any ideas? What would be the best way to turn down the brightness? I don't have the remote for this set, although a universal might work.

My best guess is it's something loose that might be affected by expansion/contraction based on ambient temperature.

Check the yoke connector connections ON the "D" board & CN107 for bad pin connections...
Could also be bad PC connections AT IC501..
Also check the wiring AT the yoke...

IF you lose vertical deflection , turn the TV OFF as QUICK as you can....
Otherwise a permanent line CAN/WILL be burnt into the screen..

According to the Service manual , surprise , surprise , there's NO menu button on the set...
You'll have to either get a Sony remote OR take your chances with a "Universal" remote...
The correct remote for 32TS46 is RM-Y118...
You can also use one of the others , RM-Y117 or RM-Y116 , but IF your TV has PIP these will not work PIP etc...
Check page 7 in the Service Manual for details...

I'll be offline till Tues AM...
Have a good evening...Smile..

Re: [Ron.M] Dead Sony KV-32TS36 [In reply to] Can't Post

Found some cracked solder on one of the R513 legs. That line goes to VDY+ so MAYBE that could be the cause, although there's another branch in parallel so I'm not sure. This board sure has taken a lot of abuse. I'm amazed it still works.

Ron, I can only find .47 ohms FP at mouser. Should I substitute a non-flameproof resistor or use a slightly different ohmage flameproof for the other one?

Anything else I should replace or at least order as a precaution? Maybe the diode on the positive path that's only yielding +12V?

CRT_Fan;......

A bad connection at R513 would definitely cause intermittent vertical sweep...
Good work...Wink...

I don't see anything in parallel with it ...
Clue me in...

.47 is fine for both...
I'd suggest you get the 1/2 watt version...
Even tho the manual has them at 1/4 watt , use the 1/2 watt resistors...

Quote

Since D502 & D503 are the same diode type , just swap them & see what happens...
IF you still get 12 vdc at D502 & 15 vdc at D503 , I wouldn't worry about it...
IF it does go to +15 vdc , then you can order a replacement...
I dont think it will...
Post results..

At this time I dont see anything else to order...Angelic...

>I don't see anything in parallel with it ...

At a glance R535 & C536 look parallel to R513 but upon inspection they look like connections to the return rail so probably not parallel in any meaningful sense.

I'll just order the diode and replace it. Slighltly less work than swapping them and it's only 50cents.

I watched a DVD last night and it was completely stable so fingers crossed that broken solder joint was the culprit. Also found that the remote for my other sony is compatible.

There's a discolored splotch in the upperleft corner. It's most noticable in the DVD loading background which is blue. The splotch appears red in that case. I hooked up the DGC but it didn't eliminate it. Could this be fixable or is it likely damage to the CRT phosphor layer?

That is most likely a yoke misalignment & NOT damage...
When you put it back on the CRT , did you put it EXACTLY where it was when you took it off ???..
How big is it ???
How prominent is it ???
Is it noticeable when you are watching a program ????

To see if the vertical problem is fixed , tap lightly to medium various areas of the "D" board with the handle end of an insulated screwdriver...
Tap the vertical heatsink & other large parts..
Stay away from the flyback !!!...
Watch the screen for ANY jittering or attempted vertical collapse...
IF you see ANY of that STOP tapping , turn the TV off & post what it's doing...
